THE GET:  I bought this cigar while at a Primer Mundo event at Broadway Cigars almost a year ago when the La Hermandad was first being launched.  As I have written before, these types of events are very beneficial to the consumer as the deals usually involve a free cigar, or six or seven, depending on how many you buy and you get to try newly released sticks.  This also supports local shops and the manufacturer.

THE PACKAGING:  At the time I first purchased this, the La Hermandad was coming un-banded; when I spoke with Sean about this, he said it was an issue with the band production, or design, or maybe even something else, I don’t remember.  I just know he said something was not working.  They are now available with bands, and the bands are huge.  A big ass, 3 inch band covers the bottom half of this cigar and is solid black with a silver rooster along with a crown and it dawns the names of both the IMG_7830cigar, La Hermandad, and the cigar’s creator, Sean Williams and the Primer Mundo Cigar Co.  Although I like the large band, I was perfectly alright with this cigar naked as well.  Some cigars just look great and can get away with it (see my review of the Cro-Magnon line).

THE CIGAR:  The La Hermandad utilizes an amazing Brazilian Arapiraca wrapper that is full of natural oils and veins; its dark brown, textured appearance and solid construction give the impression of a cigar not for the faint of heart.  To go along with that wrapper, this cigar uses Nicaraguan tobacco for both the binder and filler.  With all the nice veins in this, the seams are almost unnoticeable as is the cap.  There are three sizes in this, the sixth cigar in Primer Mundo’s line: the 6×52 Embajador, the 5×50 Caballito, and the 6×60 Consejero.  They come in unpainted wooden boxes of 24 with the La Hermandad logo embossed on the top; the 24 cigars are served up all nicely wrapped up with a ribbon to ensure a safe journey to their destination.  There are no soft spots and the cigar is uniformly stiff and packed well, although I prefer a little give in my cigars.  A pungent aroma, one I will describe as a smell you would find in a barn as you were eating a chocolate bar, surrounds the La Hermandad and it is fantastic.  I can wait no longer to light this up.

THE SMOKE:  After a clean cut, my pre-light draw was a little tight and had a strong earth taste and the oil rich wrapper leaves a slight residue of sweetness on my lips.  Catching a cherry on the tip was no problem at all and IMG_7838smoke instantly bellows from this stick.  The first few draws are chock-full of flavors and strength that has already reared its hind legs and drop-kicked me right in the throat.  When a cigar starts off so strong, it usually doesn’t peter out and this is no exception; this is a theme that continues throughout the entirety of the 2 hour smoke.  The burn was not razor-sharp but it also didn’t require any touch-ups, so it’s all good.  The ash was light in color but not in body; only three ashes occurred in this 6 inch cigar, falling just shy of 2 inches each, and they were all solid.  The small amount of pepper dissipates within the first ash as does any of the sweet on the wrapper.  What does not fade is the deep earth tobacco and the smoke it produces; an amount comparable to Liga’s and the like.  At certain points, I recognize hints of chocolate and wood which complement neatly to the overall taste.  I would not consider this overly complex but that is not a huge necessity of mine.  Temperature remained steady so I was able to get the full two hours and hold it comfortably down to the nub.

IMG_7839THE SKINNY:  Not only is this cigar box-worthy, I went up front and bought a box at this event after just three draws.  It had me at hello the power and the flavor and the smoke.  This is the third cigar from Sean that has been reviewed at smokedthatcigar.com (the Liga Miami can be found here and the Connecticut can be found here) and he has yet to put forth a cigar I would pass on.  Sean is all over this country hosting events; I recommend that you search one out, visit him, and buy a box of these cigars if not two or three. His website shows upcoming events. I am running low on mine after letting it sit and age for almost a year so I will be getting another one shortly.
